Mobile Broadband

If you’re looking to get mobile broadband then there are four main options available to you in the UK. Below you’ll find a brief summary of the different mobile networks and what their advantages and disadvantages are. Remember that the two most important things when choosing a mobile broadband network are the coverage and connection speeds so keep this in mind when making your decision.

You should also think about what you are going to use the mobile broadband for and how often you’ll need it. For example if you think that you’ll only use it occasionally then get a pay as you go plan, while if you are going to be regularly downloading big files get the network with the fastest speed in your area.

O2 Mobile Broaband

O2 have seen a massive increase in the amount of data their users are accessing due to their exclusive access to the iPhone for their customers. Even though Orange are soon able to sell the iPhone O2 have still had to continually expand their 3G network to accommodate all their users. However for people who are looking to download large amounts of data at a fast speed O2 mobile broadband may not be the best. This is the only negative though in what is otherwise a great package for the average internet user.

Orange Mobile Broadband

If you’re looking for a stable connection then Orange is definitely a good choice for you. The coverage of the network is excellent so in general you won’t have any problems connecting. However the download speeds are not up to the same level as other networks so if you are going to be downloading large files you might be frustrated. If you’re already an Orange customer though you can get some great deals so Orange are definitely worth considering.

3 Mobile Broadband

3 mobile broadband uses the most established and long term 3G network in the country and hence they have a great coverage. The speeds don’t quite match up to O2s but you are more likely to be able to find a stable connection on the 3 network. Like Orange, if you are looking for a stable network with great coverage and aren’t too worried about downloading large files then 3 is a good option. If you are an internet power user then you may want to consider Vodafone or O2 instead.

Vodafone Mobile Broadband

This is the quickest of the lot when it comes to pure speed. While it is also the most expensive option you’ll get download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps which is double most of the other networks. It is also based on a reliable network so you’ll rarely be unable to find a connection. This is the right choice for the business user or someone who is regularly going to be downloading large files. However, remember that with the extra seed comes the ability to download more data so you’ll probably need to get a large data allowance to get the most out of it.
